Backpacker Offers 100 Epic Summer Adventures

With the end of July firmly in sight, the summer season is already starting to wane here in the U.S. Before long, students will be headed back to school, the hot days and warm nights will start to fade, and will begin to turn our attention towards autumn. But, before that happens there is still plenty of summer to savor and August is still a great month to get outside and do just that. To help us get the most out of what remains of the summer, Backpacker magazine has put together a collection of 100 epic adventures to embark upon across the United States.

It would have been easy for the Backpacker team to just put together a standard list of 100 things to do with what remains of the summer, but they took things a step further. Instead of just writing out an article with tips on where to go and what to do, they’ve created an interactive map of the entire country –– including Alaska and Hawaii –– with pins dropped all over the landscape. Clicking on those pins brings up a description of what adventure awaits at that location. This allows you to not only explore the opportunities the are close to where you live, but also examine the options for places where you might be traveling as well. Each entry also includes a link to another webpage that provides much more in-depth information about what to expect and how to plan for the specific adventure.

Some of the highlights including paddling the Rio Grande River in Texas, going stargazing in South Dakota, and camping on an island in Georgia. Of course, this being Backpacker, you’ll also find plenty of suggestions on where to go hiking and camping too, as well as a few unexpected surprises. There is even one or two adventures to be had north of the border in Canada too for those who have a passport and are looking to stretch their legs.

Examining the map, there are some interesting and unique options to be found in just about every corner of the U.S. The middle part of the country is a bit sparse, but there are still a few things to do there. As you would expect, America’s west has plenty to see and do, but the eastern parts of the country isn’t lacking in opportunities for adventure either.
